Dental cleaning (scaling) do not damage enamel of your teeth. Scaling safely remove deposits and bacteria that builds up over time on the teeth and the gums. Scaling prevents gum diseases due to inflammation produced by the deposits.
Scaling cannot cause spacing. Spaces seems to appear following a scaling procedure because those spaces have long been there; they were just covered in tartar. Once the tartar is removed, these spaces become evident.
Decades ago, that may have been the case, but with modern technology and anesthetics you won't experience any more pain than if you went to have a cavity filled. The pain from a severe toothache, often caused by damaged tissues in the tooth, can be easily remedied when an endodontist removes the damaged tissue through root canal treatment. In addition, endodontists are experts in pain management, and most cases can be treated quickly and comfortably.
Information you may find on the internet or elsewhere, claiming that if you receive a root canal treatment, you're more likely to become ill or contract a disease in the future simply isn't true. This false claim was based on long-debunked and poorly designed research conducted nearly a century ago, long before modern medicine understood the causes of many diseases. There is no valid, scientific evidence linking root canal treatment to disease elsewhere in the body.
Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is always the best option. Nothing artificial can replace the look or function of a natural tooth so it's important to always consider root canal treatment as an option. Endodontics treatment has a high success rate and many root - canal treated teeth last a lifetime. Replacing an extracted tooth with a bridge or implant requires more time in treatment and may result in further procedures to neighbouring teeth and supporting tissue.
Cavities and tooth decay in baby teeth can negatively affect the health of the permanent teeth. If the decay is small, it needs to be filled. The baby teeth (primary teeth) may have to undergo pulpectomy if the decay is extensive. In some cases, wherein the tooth cannot be saved, it needs to removed followed by placement of an appliance called space maintainer which maintains the space of the removed tooth till the permanent tooth erupts else the permanent tooth may erupt in an abnormal position due to lack of space.
Good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay. Here are some tips to help prevent cavities. Ask your dentist which tips are best for you.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day and ideally after every meal.
Avoid frequent snacking and sipping. Whenever you eat or drink beverages other than water, you help your mouth bacteria create acids that can destroy tooth enamel. If you snack or drink throughout the day, your teeth are under constant attack.
Visit your dentist regularly. Get professional teeth cleanings and regular oral exams, which can help prevent problems or spot them early.
Consider dental sealants. A sealant is a protective plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of back teeth. It seals off grooves and crannies that tend to collect food, protecting tooth enamel from plaque and acid. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) recommentds sealants for all school-age children. Sealants may last for several years before they need to be replaced, but they need to be checked regularly.
Consider fluoride treatments. Your dentist may recommend periodic fluoride treatments, especially if you aren't getting enough fluoride through fluoridated drinking water and other sources.
Absolutely yes. Certain treatments like treatment for jaw growth abnormalities can be corrected in the growing phase itself with the use of myofunctional appliances. If left untreated during this phase and if the patient has reached adolescent or adult phase, he / she may have to undergo surgery to correct it. In addition, certain habits in children like mouth breathing, tongue thrusting etc can cause tooth malalignment. If such habits are detected early and appropriate treatment given, we can prevent / decrease the severity of tooth malalignments later in life.
